Obituary of William Alexander Stewart

William (Bill) Alexander Stewart passed away peacefully on March 4, 2024, at Victoria Hospital to the sounds of one of his favourite musical artists, Django Reinhart. Bill is survived by his son Derek (Jodi), brother Jim (May), sister Maureen Cains, niece Kerry, and nephews Barry, Steven, and Craig, and grandnieces and grandnephews. Bill is predeceased by his parents William and Margaret, and his dear companion Hazel Hepburn. Born in Elgin, Scotland on June 27, 1941, Bill started his working life as a police officer in Glasgow and then in London, England. He migrated to Canada in his 20’s, beginning his new life where he worked with banks and the CRA in loans and auditing. His work, however, was only a tool to support his real passion of playing the guitar and banjo. From Dixieland to Big Band to Gypsy Jazz, Bill lived and breathed music. Retiring at a young 55 years of age, he spent his retirement playing in bands, teaching anyone who was keen to learn, and jamming for hours with friends in Canada, the USA, and Scotland. He inspired many others to pick up an instrument and will be fondly remembered in the jazz community. Bill was a supportive and encouraging friend and father who lived a simple life exploring the French Language, requiring only friends, music, and walks outside, rain or shine, to be happy. His departure will leave a hole in many hearts. A Celebration of Bill’s life is being planned for the warmer weather in the summer. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are welcomed. Online condolences may be shared on Bill's Tribute Wall at www.mpcemetery.ca.
